From Rejection to Reinvention: Building Trust & AI Innovation in My Startup Journey

When I started working on my student-focused platform in Toronto, I believed that a solid plan, a prototype, and passion would be enough to succeed. However, before I could even register the company, I faced my first major challenge: market validation.


I reached out to over 100 vendors to test my idea. While some conversations were promising, the majority ended in rejection. The reason? Trust. As a recent international graduate with no corporate history, big investors, or brand recognition, I appeared risky to many vendors.


That initial rejection, while disheartening, drove me to rethink my approach and evolve my platform. I soon realized that to gain trust, I had to turn my marketplace into something much more valuable.


Turning to AI for a Competitive Edge


Around this time, I watched an inspiring interview with Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity. He discussed how AI is transforming various industries, and it sparked an essential idea: what if I deeply integrated AI into my student marketplace?


I began to plan multiple features that could set my platform apart:


  • Personalized feeds that adapt to user preferences.

  • Smart chatbots to enhance customer service and engagement.

  • Fraud detection measures to ensure vendor safety.

  • Vendor analytics dashboards providing insights into their performance.

  • Demand prediction capabilities to suggest deals based on trending items.

  • AI-driven student wallet to manage finances efficiently.

  • Campus-aware recommendations tailored perfectly for Gen Z users.


This shift turned my vision from a basic marketplace into a smart ecosystem that benefited both students and vendors.

Influencers as Partners, Not Promoters


Next, I reconsidered how to engage students. Instead of paying influencers for standard advertising, I approached them as partners.


  • Students received genuine, validated recommendations from trusted sources.

  • Vendors could connect with verified influencers suited to their niches, whether it be food, fashion, or lifestyle.

  • Influencers would find valuable business opportunities through my platform.


This strategy made my platform a bridge not only between vendors and students but also among vendors and influencers. It created a unique, multi-sided ecosystem.


The Importance of Trust in Business


Trust forms the foundation of any successful business relationship. My early rejections underscored the need to build trust among students and vendors.


To bridge this gap, I committed to transparency, sharing my vision and the platform's potential benefits directly with vendors. By openly discussing my struggles and successes, I helped humanize my brand. This authenticity gradually changed how vendors perceived me, building the trust I needed.


Leveraging Technology for Trust


Integrating AI into my platform was essential for improving user experience and establishing trust.


For instance, the fraud detection tools were created to safeguard vendors against scams, giving them the reassurance they needed to work with me.


Furthermore, the analytics dashboards equipped vendors with important data about their sales and customer behaviors, enabling them to make informed decisions. By providing these resources, I not only built trust but also empowered vendors to thrive in a competitive landscape.


Engaging the Student Community


Realizing the importance of the student community was crucial for my platform’s success. I aimed to create an environment where students felt valued and involved.


To achieve this, I organized focus groups and feedback sessions, inviting students to share their thoughts on the features and functionality of the platform. This collaborative effort not only helped refine the platform but also instilled a sense of ownership among students, leading to increased engagement and loyalty.


The Role of Feedback in Evolution


Feedback became an essential part of my journey. Each interaction with vendors and students brought insights that guided the platform’s development.


I learned to embrace criticism as a catalyst for growth. Rather than seeing rejection as a failure, I began to view it as an opportunity to improve. This shift in mindset was game-changing, equipping me to adapt to user needs and keeping the platform relevant.

I created a rating and review system that allowed users to share their vendor experiences openly. This transparency helped students make informed choices, while also encouraging vendors to uphold high service standards. By establishing a culture of accountability, I created an environment where trust could bloom.

Collaboration emerged as a key aspect of my journey. I actively sought partnerships with local organizations, universities, and student groups to broaden the platform's reach.


These alliances not only provided valuable resources but also strengthened my credibility. By connecting with trusted institutions, I enhanced the platform's reputation and attracted more vendors and students alike.
